A prescription for the perfect jeans

For most types of clothing, the shopping process is straightforward enough: find an item you like, in a size that fits.

But with items like suits, jackets and jeans, the process is rarely that easy. Unless you fit a sample size, it can be hard to find a fitted item that flatters your curves nicely.

Shopgirls Gallery Boutique is stepping up to help shoppers with this dilemma – particularly when it comes to jeans. The Queen Street establishment is hosting a ‘Dr. Denim Clinic’, where guests will be receive a body-type diagnosis and a “prescription” for the perfect pair of jeans.

The ‘doctor’, in this case, is Eric Wazana, creator of Second Denim Co.– the Canadian brand which manufacturers the Yoga Jeans sold by Shopgirls.

Second Denim’s Yoga Jeans

Second Denim boasts an impressive collection of jeans, with a selection of different styles that’s almost overwhelming. The pants are available in low, mid and high-rise fits, with styles ranging from ‘super skinny’ to ‘super flared’, and various different lengths and colours.

They’re appropriately dubbed ‘Yoga Jeans’ for their stretchy, comfy material. A proud owner of high-rise skinny Yoga Jeans myself, I can vouch for them: they’re by far the comfiest jeans I own.

Given the variety of available styles, however, I can see how some expert advice could help an intimidated first-time buyer narrow down the options and find the pair of jeans best suited to her body.

As a bonus, clinic guests can enter to win a pair of Yoga jeans, and will be among the first to see the new limited edition Shopgirls Yoga Jeans by Second. Clinic details are below.

What? Dr. Denim Clinic

When? Thursday, Nov. 8th, 6 pm – 9 pm

Where? Shopgirls Gallery Boutique – 1342 Queen St. West, Toronto

An upscale garage sale

Garage sale season is well underway, and in an effort to get in on the action, jewellery retailer Made You Look has launched an outdoor sale of its own.

The brand new Vendors Market, which launched June 4th, will operate each Saturday throughout the summer next to Made You Look Accessories in the Parkdale neighbourhood.

A joint venture with other businesses and residents in the area, the market will feature discounted handmade jewellery from some of Made You Look’s 100-plus designers, along with a wide variety of other local products and services.

The idea is to bring local businesses together and to showcase what Parkdale has to offer, says Sarah Hamel, founder of Made You Look.

Other vendors participating in the market include:

  • ShopGirls Gallery Boutique, offering Yoga Jeans demonstrations
  • The Well of Alternative Medicine, offering $1-per-minute massages
  • The Rustic Cosmo, selling homemade jam
  • Parkdale Prana Room, selling iced tea and offering free tarot card readings
  • Café Taste, offering cheese samples from local producers
  • Fringe Salon, offering discount coupons on hairstyles
  • Mangez, offering free samples of handmade treats

In addition, local residents will collaborate to sell second-hand clothing, vintage clothing, handmade cards and other repurposed finds.

The market will operate rain or shine, as it’s protected by large tents.

The Vendors Market presents a great opportunity to check out the various retail offerings of the trendy Parkdale neighbourhood. So instead of garage-sale-hopping this summer, swing by this one-stop-shop for all of your bargain-hunting needs.

Shopgirls celebrates three successful years

Queen Street West is home to plenty of fun, fashionable boutiques, and standing out among them is Shopgirls Gallery Boutique.

Twiss & Weber Coffee Cozy, $14 at Shopgirls Gallery Boutique.

A hub for Canadian talent that carries products designed by more than 80 artists and designers,  Shopgirls was launched by Michelle Germain three years ago.  The shop’s merchandise includes a wide range of clothing, jewellery and accessories, along with paintings and various household items.

Creativity radiates throughout the large, 1,800 square-foot boutique, where you can find a huge collection of unique products that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Take, for instance, a collection of adorable coffee cup sleeves made of felt and embellished with colourful, decorative, flowers made by Ottawa-based Twiss & Weber.

Other items I particularly like include the store’s Matt & Nat handbags, its drapey Covet tops and its Second Clothing Yoga Jeans – an item that seems to be one of the shop’s hottest sellers.

Shopgirls celebrated its third anniversary on Thursday with a fun party where shoppers came together to browse the boutique’s newest collections and mingle over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The celebration continues throughout this weekend, when visitors to the Parkdale Village boutique can pop a balloon to win between 15% and 50% off of their purchase.

Don’t pass up this great excuse to visit an absolutely charming Toronto boutique that showcases tons of Canadian design talent.

Congrats to Shogirls on three successful years!
