Retail Roundup

It’s been a busy fall for Toronto’s retail scene, with plenty of new stores opening in and around the GTA. In case you haven’t been able to keep up, here’s a roundup of some of the newest shopping destinations around the city.

The city's new Ben Sherman boutique, where a launch party took place on Nov. 3rd.

  • Joe Fresh celebrated the opening of its newest domestic standalone store in October, located on Queen Street West near Portland St. in Toronto. Fans of the fashion line owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd. are thrilled with the new boutique, which is the most accessible Joe Fresh location for most downtown dwellers.
  • Also new to Queen Street West is a Ben Sherman boutique. It’s the first free-standing store in Canada for the British-based men’s line. Known for quality button-down shirts, the label also carries pants, outerwear, shoes and accessories.
  • Men’s and women’s apparel chain RW&CO. has opened a new store in Oakville Place. The chain, owned by Reitmans Canada Ltd., now operates 67 stores across Canada that target men and women between the ages of 18 and 30.
  • Edmonton-based The Running Room has added two new locations to the GTA: one at Dundas and highway 403 in Oakville; and one at the Bramalea City Centre in Brampton. The chain, which specializes in shoes, apparel and accessories for runners, now has more than 110 locations – and doesn’t appear likely to run out of steam anytime soon.

That’s not all. As the weeks go by and the temperature continues to drop, more stores are set to open around the city. Here’s a couple to watch for.

  • The GTA’s newest Victoria’s Secret store is set to open this Thursday at Scarborough Town Centre. To celebrate the new location, shoppers who spend $75 or more will receive a tote bag filled with goodies. And, shoppers wanting to get in touch with their inner angel can have their photo taken at the mall’s centre court on Thursday and Friday.
  • Later in the month, a new Danier store will open in Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga. Specializing in leather apparel and accessories, the chain has more than 90 locations across the country – and the newest one will arrive just in time for the chilliest time of year, when many GTA shoppers will no doubt be in the market for a new jacket.

Fashion, fun and fierce competition at Mapleview

GTA fashion lovers congregated in the west end last week.

Mapleview Centre in Burlington hosted its 2011 style party on Tuesday, where attendees learned about fall trends and competed for the chance to become the Mapleview Style Icon: a gig that includes a $2,000 blogging contract and a $500 gift card for the mall.

The lucky finalists, including the winner, Krystin Lee, on the far left.

Of 80 semi-finalists who attended, three lucky finalists were chosen based on their savvy sense of style. They participated in a challenge that had them each spend an hour putting together a trendy fall outfit from stores throughout the mall, and then they modeled their creations for judges and guests.

Fashionista Krystin Lee, whose outfit included python print pants paired with an orange jacket, won the challenge and the blogging gig. (Congrats!)

Meanwhile, Flare Magazine’s associate editor of fashion news, Mosha Lundström Halbert, gave a thorough overview of the hottest trends for the season. Guests learned how to properly sport such trends as python print, menswear for ladies, and ‘naughty but nice’ looks.

Mosha Lundström Halbert, left, discusses trends for fall 2011 as they're modeled on the runway.

And models showed off sample fall outfits picked from the mall’s own retailers, such as Zara, Forever 21 and Guess.

With these and plenty of other fashionable retailers, Mapleview has certainly become a great destination for fashion since I was last there a couple years ago.  And some major retailers are taking notice.

Michael Kors, for instance, is set to open a location in the mall in early November, and a Victoria’s Secret location is also on the way.

Mapleview also has a fresh new look since I saw it last. Renovations in recent years have added a generous new chunk of space to the mall, and have created a modern and chic look and feel.

The style party was a great chance to rediscover this west-end mall. Hopefully I’ll find another excuse to visit the fashion hub again sometime soon.

New shops to go with a new look

Scarborough Town Centre has been gearing up for the busy back-to-school shopping season by adding a slew of new stores to its retail mix.

Since its renovation last year (A shiny new shopping hub for Scarborough), the mall has been freshening up its offerings. STC targets fashionable 15-44-year-olds who live in Scarborough and other communities in the east end of the GTA.

Here are some of the shopping center’s newest additions and looming arrivals:

Justice. This tween hot-spot opened recently on the upper level, providing girls aged 7 to 14 with a new go-to destination for fashionable apparel.

Eyestar Optical. The mall’s newest eye-wear retailer specializes in trendy collections of sunglasses and prescription glasses, carrying such designers as Bvlgari, Cartier, Prada, Oakley and Dolce & Gabbana.

Zumiez. Opening this month, Zumiez offers skateboards, snowboards, and everything you need to look cool on the board of your choice: hoodies, Vans, headphones and a huge variety of other apparel, shoes and accessories.

ecko unltd. Ecko, with its world-famous Rhino t-shirts, sweatpants, hats and more, is poised to open this fall.

Journeys. This funky and casual footwear and accessory retailer, arriving in October, carries such brands as Adidas, Converse, DC and Nike.

Forever XXI. In November – just in time for the chaotic holiday shopping season – the shopping centre will become host to a large new two-storey Forever XXI store, occupying 27,000 sq. ft. of space.

Victoria’s Secret. Also set to arrive in November, the new Victoria’s Secret location will be situated next to its newly added sister store, PINK.

Also set to open in the months ahead are familiar Canadian brands M for Mendocino and Aritzia.

Scarborough shoppers, start saving: a shopping spree may be in store.
