Fashionable finds at Dufferin Mall. Really.

Dufferin Mall is rebranding itself as a fashion destination, and as part of a unique marketing effort to promote its new identity, it sent models onto the streets of Liberty Village this week to get Toronotonians talking about the shopping destination.

The mall is taking steps to distance itself from the reputation it’s had in the past. With discount retailers Wal-Mart and No Frills as the mall’s primary anchors, it has tended to be viewed as a lower-end mall.

However, the shopping centre has recently invested in upgrading its look, and has attracted a variety of popular fashion retailers along the way. They include: H&M, Le Chateau, Costa Blanca, Aldo, Spring, and Aeropostale, among others.

To promote these and other retailers, this week the mall launched a campaign called ReallyRunway, which effectively turned the streets of Liberty Village into one giant runway.

Models, dressed head to toe in the latest spring trends from various Dufferin Mall retailers, were sent out onto the streets to showcase the fashions. Each carrying huge bouquets of helium-filled green and black balloons, the models were easy to spot and thus, drew plenty of attention.

The campaign also featured a media kick-off party at trendy Liberty Village lounge Locus 144, where bloggers and fashion media were able to get a closer look at the models’ trendy outfits. They featured such current trends as bright coloured pants, 1960s mod-style fashions and black and white patterns.

It’s no easy feat for any business – especially a shopping centre – to shed one image and adopt an entirely new one. Once consumers have formed an impression, it tends to stick.

But with its bold marketing campaign, Dufferin Mall seems to be doing a good job of getting people talking. And if it’s successful, it’ll prompt shoppers to give the mall another chance.

I’ve only been to Dufferin Mall a handful of times, but the last time I stopped by, I did notice quite a drastic difference in the mall’s look and feel, and the quality of retailers. I’m sure other shoppers who give the mall a second chance will be similarly impressed.

As another ploy to get shoppers engaged, Dufferin Mall also recently introduced free Wi-Fi access throughout the entire mall – a convenient perk for tech-savvy shoppers.

And, the shopping centre has launched an iPhone app that features a full store directory, contact information and contests, and keeps shoppers informed on current store promotions.

With its new focus, new feel and new services, it’s a new chapter for Dufferin Mall.

Bargain hunting? There’s an app for that.

Toronto shoppers, your coupon-clipping days may be over. You’ll now be able to better keep track of nearby sales and promotions, wherever in Toronto you may be.

A new iPhone app and mobile site from Torstar Digital, called ShopCatch, features listings of promotions, sales and exclusive offerings at retailers and malls around the GTA.

The app tracks your location and displays the latest sales at all kinds of retailers nearby. By logging on today, for instance, you’d find out that all new fall merchandise at Danier Leather is now 25% off, and that spring and summer footwear at Browns is up to 70% off, among many other discounts around the city.

The site also connects you with exclusive shopping deals and mobile coupons that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to. For example, HMV shoppers could get $10 off a purchase of $60 or more through ShopCatch. Just show the promotional code or coupon to the cashier at the store to redeem the deal.

The app lets you search for stores and categories of merchandise, and features interactive mall maps and store directories to help you find what you’re looking for, whichever mall you’re exploring.

And one of the most useful features, in my opinion, is the ability to ‘follow’ your favourite retailers so that you never miss a sale or promotion.

As much as I enjoy getting the occasional email to alert me of sales at my favourite stores, this type of mobile site proves way more helpful by notifying me of the sales when I’m shopping, wherever I am.

Kudos to Torstar for creating an app that’s likely to come in handy for many Toronto shoppers. I hope the company moves quickly to roll out compatible versions of the ShopCatch app for HTC phones and BlackBerries, too.

Four apps for GTA shoppers

Scarborough Town Centre has become the latest GTA shopping centre to launch a mobile application.

In the past year or two, many malls have launched smart phone “apps” designed to keep shoppers connected.

The apps help you find what you’re looking for when you’re at the mall, and keep you posted on promotions, trends and mall information in between visits.

For example, you can look up operating hours or directions to the shopping centre; check for sales or promotions at your favourite stores; or navigate through the mall with an interactive map that shows you the quickest route to any given store.

Some apps go even further. The new app from Scarborough Town Centre features a fashion album page displaying trends picked out by the mall’s fashion director, and a price comparison tool that lets you find the best deal on the item you want.

It also lets you get your friends’ opinions, virtually, before you make a big purchase: just snap a photo of the item you want to buy, and using the app, share it with friends via Twitter, Facebook or YouTube.
