An expanded retail footprint for essence

European makeup brand essence has gained more shelf space in the Canadian retail market, thanks to a recent mega retail merger.

essence, which is owned by German cosmetics company Cosnova GmbH, is known for fun and affordable makeup products, with an average retail price of just $3.69.

The brand made its Canadian debut in 2012, under an exclusive distribution partnership with Shoppers Drug Mart. With the 2014 acquisition of Shoppers having brought the drug store chain under the ownership of Loblaw Companies Ltd., essence has now gained a massive new distribution network.

In addition to its presence within Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores, essence is gaining real estate this spring within certain Loblaws grocery stores.

Under the new distribution arrangement, designated Loblaws stores will carry twice as many essence products compared with the amount of essence merchandise available at Shoppers Drug Mart. Loblaws stores will also carry certain exclusive essence products that are not available anywhere else in the Canadian market.

The essence brand seems a good fit for Loblaws, where its in-house fashion and cosmetics brand, Joe Fresh, shares a similar philosophy of trendy items for affordable prices.

At a downtown Toronto event in late February, essence showcased its spring makeup collection, including certain Loblaws exclusives. The new collection features plenty of pastels and bright spring colours that are sure to attract shoppers as the products make their debut on the shelves of their new retail partner.

An old hockey rink, a new retail hub

It’s a big week for Toronto’s retail scene, as one of the city’s landmarks makes its debut as a freshly made-over retail hub.

Maple Leaf Gardens, the former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, finally re-opened its doors to the public this week as Loblaws put the finishing touches on the large new grocery store located in the former hockey arena. Hundreds of people lined up to see the new supermarket, and it got rave reviews from shoppers.

The newly renovated complex at Church and Carlton also features a new Joe Fresh clothing store and an LCBO liquor store.

The venue holds an abundance of heartfelt memories for hockey fans. It was the home rink for the Leafs for nearly seven decades – during which the Leafs won 11 Stanley Cups – before the team moved to the Air Canada Centre in 1999.

Appropriately, hockey will be a part of the landmark’s future: a revamped arena at Maple Leaf Gardens is set to open in spring 2012, which will be home to Ryerson University’s hockey team, the Rams.

I’m glad they’re finally bringing life back to this building, which has been an important part of Toronto’s history, and I think it’s great that it will once again become a destination for hockey fans and players alike.

And now, shoppers can enjoy the venue, too.

Retail Roundup

It’s been a busy fall for Toronto’s retail scene, with plenty of new stores opening in and around the GTA. In case you haven’t been able to keep up, here’s a roundup of some of the newest shopping destinations around the city.

The city's new Ben Sherman boutique, where a launch party took place on Nov. 3rd.

  • Joe Fresh celebrated the opening of its newest domestic standalone store in October, located on Queen Street West near Portland St. in Toronto. Fans of the fashion line owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd. are thrilled with the new boutique, which is the most accessible Joe Fresh location for most downtown dwellers.
  • Also new to Queen Street West is a Ben Sherman boutique. It’s the first free-standing store in Canada for the British-based men’s line. Known for quality button-down shirts, the label also carries pants, outerwear, shoes and accessories.
  • Men’s and women’s apparel chain RW&CO. has opened a new store in Oakville Place. The chain, owned by Reitmans Canada Ltd., now operates 67 stores across Canada that target men and women between the ages of 18 and 30.
  • Edmonton-based The Running Room has added two new locations to the GTA: one at Dundas and highway 403 in Oakville; and one at the Bramalea City Centre in Brampton. The chain, which specializes in shoes, apparel and accessories for runners, now has more than 110 locations – and doesn’t appear likely to run out of steam anytime soon.

That’s not all. As the weeks go by and the temperature continues to drop, more stores are set to open around the city. Here’s a couple to watch for.

  • The GTA’s newest Victoria’s Secret store is set to open this Thursday at Scarborough Town Centre. To celebrate the new location, shoppers who spend $75 or more will receive a tote bag filled with goodies. And, shoppers wanting to get in touch with their inner angel can have their photo taken at the mall’s centre court on Thursday and Friday.
  • Later in the month, a new Danier store will open in Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga. Specializing in leather apparel and accessories, the chain has more than 90 locations across the country – and the newest one will arrive just in time for the chilliest time of year, when many GTA shoppers will no doubt be in the market for a new jacket.

A fresh new Joe Fresh location

Cheap and trendy apparel line Joe Fresh is continuing to grow as it celebrates its fifth anniversary, with a new store set to open in Vaughan Mills this week.

A grand opening of the new store will take place this Thursday, May 19th, and all day long, shoppers will receive 20% off all purchases.

Since launching in 2006 with lines of men’s and women’s apparel that were sold in grocery stores operated by Joe Fresh’s parent company, Loblaw Companies Ltd., the brand has expanded to include a children’s collection, intimates and sleepwear, swimwear, sunglasses, jewellery, bath products and makeup.

The new Vaughan Mills store is one of four new standalone Joe Fresh locations opening this spring, including one at Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga, one at Bramalea City Centre in Brampton, and one in Alberta.

The brand will also open two new studio stores later this year in Toronto: one on Queen Street West and one in the old Maple Leaf Gardens space. Joe Fresh already operates two studio stores in the city: one in Forest Hill and one on Queens Quay.

In total, Joe Fresh is aiming to open 20 standalone stores in Canada in the months to come. The line is already available in more than 300 other stores across the country, including Loblaw and Superstore locations.

With this kind of reach, it’s no surprise Joe Fresh is thriving.

The stylish clothing collection, designed by Joseph Mimran – a former designer for such successful fashion labels as Alfred Sung and Club Monaco – are conveniently located in grocery stores where men and women are already doing some shopping.

And at amazingly low prices, it’s easy for shoppers to justify throwing a t-shirt, dress or new pair of sweats into the shopping cart. (Almost too easy.)

Having had success within grocery stores, prospects are looking good for Joe Fresh in the boutique business. And not just in Canada.

Just three months ago, Joe Fresh announced that it would expand outside of Canada for the first time, with a new standalone store on Fifth Avenue in New York City this fall.

If you’re itching to visit one of the new stores, this weekend is a good time to do it. Stop by the new Vaughan Mills location for some great deals, including:
